Joint construction work with farmers

OCP Group works to strengthen the entire African agricultural ecosystem by providing farmers with the means to succeed. With the help of our partners, we work closely with farmers to develop best farming practices, but also to test soils, recommend fertilizers, facilitate financing, and improve access to markets.

The agricultural caravan going out to meet farmers To complete

The Agricultural Caravan, launched by OCP in 2012, is used to map soils in order to create a decision-making tool for better fertilizer recommendations. This initiative of the OCP Foundation in partnership with the ministries of agriculture of host countries is a truly local tool that has proven its effectiveness in terms of organization and the ability to rally, support, and mentor farmers. After launching two Agricultural Caravans in 2017, in Togo and Madagascar, then another in Burkina Faso last May, a new one was started on June 1, 2018, in Ethiopia.

The OCP School Lab, making best farming practices and technology accessible

The OCP School Lab is another example of a promising initiative that promotes partnership to build sustainable agriculture. It has two main components:

  • A mobile school that offers awareness training for farmers in best agricultural practices adapted to the dominant crops in the regions where it is travels: for example, cocoa and rice for Côte d’Ivoire or corn for Kenya;
  • A soil analysis mobile laboratory that uses the latest technology and makes it possible to test soil fertility in real time.

The school provides demonstrations and interactive training sessions using fun learning materials. The laboratory addresses the more technical aspects, such as the nutritional needs of soils and fertilizer recommendations. The laboratory has the latest modern technology like mid-infrared sensors (MIR) and x-ray technology. It provides almost instant soil fertility test results. Training and access to technology are two key components that make it possible for farmers to have regular contact with agronomists.

Since 2016, more than 50,000 farmers in 7 African countries have benefited from OCP Africa assistance in Nigeria, Togo, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Burkina Faso, and Senegal.

Another project, the Agribooster program, is being tested and rolled out on the continent. This program, which provides farmers with high-quality inputs, gives them access to a secure market for selling their crops, credit, insurance (if needed), and equipment.

Smart agriculture, technology serving agricultural processing

Smart farming is the future of agriculture and OCP Group has established itself as a pioneer in this field. Specific examples illustrate this ambition to support farmers in adopting best agricultural practices using digital technology and solutions that make it possible to recommend fertilizers directly to farmers, or the use of new technologies to aid in the research and development required to develop new products that are increasingly tailored to soils and crops.

"Al moutmir li khadamat al qorb", the new outreach initiative to better support farmers in Morocco.

Convinced that close proximity to farmers is a key lever in better serving and supporting them, OCP has set up a local initiative called "Al Moutmir Li Khadamat Al Qorb". A variation of the larger "Al Moutmir Initiative” which illustrates our Group's commitment to agricultural development in Morocco and which results in a multitude of offers, services and solutions deployed to the ‘fellahs’ (the dialectal name for farmers).
