An opencast mine

Located 17 km to the East of Benguerir and 77 km away from Youssoufia, the Benguerir opencast mine is in the Western part of the Gantour deposit. Since 1965, the site has been the subject of a series of reconnaissance and upgrading geological surveys so much so that the site development plan has been designed to allow a progressive extension of the production capacity. The present stage aims at increasing the extraction output from 3.10 to 4.5 million tons a year by 2018.

After extraction, the production at Benguerir is carried on trucks and trains either to the chemical industries operations in Safi or to the treatment plant in Youssoufia. Part of the production, intended for export, is shipped out from the bulk ore ports of Jorf Lasfar and Casablanca.
