Within OCP, optimized water use has become a strategic component of its industrial projects and is being harmoniously integrated into a new, more environmentally friendly investment concept.
The group has developed programs that better value water resources including transport of liquid ore from mining sites to chemical plants, desalination of seawater, treatment of domestic urban waste water, recycling of sludge water and harvesting and collection of storm water.
Eliminating phosphate drying prior to its transport by train will result in savings of 30 DH per ton, as phosphate pulp will increase from 12 percent to 40 percent of the moisture in the pipeline, then to 60 percent when it is sold at market. Recovering the pipeline water will save 3 million cubic meters of water per year.
Seawater desalination will be achieved by using energy recovered from the industrial process. It will supply the water demand of the Jorf Lasfar platform, estimated to be 47 million cubic meters of freshwater per year, eventually replacing the 25 million cubic meters pumped annually from the Daourat dam. Ultimately, there will be 100 million cubic meters produced annually from desalination at various OCP Group sites.
In Khouribga and Youssoufia, OCP is developing washing plants equipped with sludge settling and waste water treatment and recycling systems, which will save and recover nearly 5.8 million cubic meters of water annually. Similar projects are under consideration for Benguerir.
This project, conducted jointly with the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), enables the treatment and recycling of five million cubic meters of water annually that will be used in sludge washing and urban landscape watering. Two identical projects are under construction in Youssoufia and Benguerir, with respective capacities of 2.7 and 2.6 million cubic meters annually.
